Call out for Freelance Dance practitioner -
Move Together St Austell, PAID

Move Together is a project run by Dance Centred CIC, providing free, weekly creative dance sessions for women affected by cancer. The project is open to women at any stage of their cancer journey whether recently diagnosed, undergoing treatment or in remission. Move Together has been running in Newquay for over 3 years and is now expanding to St Austell.

Dance Centred Co-Director Sam Lawrence is the Lead Dance Artist for Move Together, and she will lead the sessions in St Austell. We are looking for a Dance Practitioner to support these sessions on Wednesdays at Studio 4, St Austell, from 1st Oct 2025. Sessions will run 10.30-12.30.

Move Together is about dance, choreography and the creative process, inspiring participants to develop their movement skills, vocabulary and find their movement ‘voice’. It enables them to re-connect with their bodies, re-discover joy in moving and find confidence in self-expression in a safe and supportive setting, underpinned by a common experience and understanding.

You will need to:

  • Be confident at working creatively

  • Be sensitive to the needs of others

  • Be attentive and responsive, with excellent listening skills.

  • Have high levels of emotional intelligence

  • Have your own public liability and DBS

As you will always be participating as a dancer in the session, your dance skills and ability to inspire others with the quality of your movement are important.

Role:

  • Support lead artist in delivery of sessions

  • Support participants to get the most out of the session

  • Non-verbal and verbal reinforcement of the tasks

  • Demonstrate alternative movement approaches to tasks for different levels of mobility

  • Set up studio materials and props and helping clear away

  • Help to engender a safe and supportive atmosphere

  • Greet participants warmly as they arrive, helping to make them feel welcome

There is always lots of joy and laughter, but there will be times when women are struggling with difficult emotions, and you will need to be confident in your ability to respond with compassion, warmth and non-judgement.

Availability:

You will need to be available Wednesdays during term time (10 sessions per term) 10.00am -1.00pm plus x1 day per term planning time with the Lead Dance Artist. This is an opportunity to develop your skills/experience in dance for cancer care, with access to cancer awareness training. Whilst Sam will be leading the sessions, there is potential for you to bring your ideas/practice/skills.

Fee: £95 per session (30 sessions per year) and £360 for 3 days planning per year.
Our current funding enables us to offer these sessions and this opportunity for 2 years.

It is amazing you as a small scale dance company are putting so much  into supporting the dance sector and us as freelancers, thank you.

Generally I work quite isolated but today I found the need to work more intimately with the dance network of my county.

I really appreciate the efforts you are making to reunite the dance practitioners in the area, highlighting all the potential our work has to offer.
