Sea Dances - The Residency

Lois Taylor (Co-director Dance Centred ) has brought together an exciting group of early career/ graduate dance artists in a choreographic residency partnership between Sterts Arts& Environmental Centre and Dance Centred.

This new work made especially for the Barn Theatre, has an original sound score by Launceston based composer and musician Arlow Anwin and rather fabulous costumes by Liskeard based textile and print artist and Nicki Harwood.

Our evening also brings you a wonderful mix of film, dance performance and spoken word, by artists including: Gocha Maria Mendibles, Janice Schnieder, Shallal Dance Theatre and Dance Centred.

The sea is a powerful part of Cornwall’s identity — vast, vulnerable, and vital to us all. The Sea Dances creative project has spent a year bringing people together to explore, express and share our connections to the sea.

How does the sea move you
and how do you see the sea move?

Sea Dances Downderry, was a Creative Community Project exploring the sea and our relationship to it launching in October 2024 and running until April 2025.

Sam and Lois, invited the local community and organisations to engage with the question

How does the sea move you and how do you see the sea move?

People were invited to respond in any art form, independently or with others and facilitated a number of creative oportunities for people to connect and gain inspiratin including; creative conversations, writing workshops, dance and choreography sessions, and a Facebook group.

The culmination of which led to the Sea Dances Finale in April 2025, bringing together and sharing of spoken word, art, textiles, film, a wearable art fashion show and of course lots of dance and movement!
Over 60 people of all ages from the local community gathered together to support, enjoy and participate in a truly rich and diverse selection of ideas and creative output.

This project was made possible with funding from FEAST, Hall for Cornwall, Cornwall Councillors Community Chest Funding and is supported by The Zone, Downderry.
